ATHENS (AA) – Bulgaria on Wednesday joined several other European and world countries in condemning the suspected Israeli attack on the Iranian consulate in the Syrian capital city of Damascus on Monday, which killed at least seven people, including two generals of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

“In line with the European Union, Bulgaria condemns the attack on an Iranian diplomatic installation in Damascus on 1 April, as well as the reported casualties,” the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“In this highly tense regional situation, it is imperative to show utmost restraint. Further escalation in the region is in no one’s interest,” it added.

The ministry noted that “The principle of the inviolability of diplomatic and consular premises and personnel must be respected in all cases and all circumstances in accordance with international law.”

The suspected Israeli strike killed seven people, including two generals from Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, the commander of the Quds Force in Lebanon and Syria, and his deputy, Brig. Gen. Mohammad Hadi Haji Rahimi.
