ISTANBUL (AA) - Cambodia is taking "precautionary measures" after the Southeast Asian nation reported its first case of Zika virus since 2017, authorities said Monday.
The patient, a seven-year-old girl from the central Kampong Thom province, has been undergoing treatment at a local public hospital for a week, the ministry said.
Medical tests confirmed on Sept. 21 that she was Zika virus positive.
Health authorities have since "taken precautionary measures," the daily Khmer Times reported on Monday.
"So far, no new cases have been found," said Ly Sovann, director of the Communicable Disease Control Department.
The Zika virus spreads primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito belonging to the Aedes genus. While the infection is not fatal, it can cause serious neurologic complications.
