HAMILTON, Canada (AA) - Canada on Tuesday announced a new round of sanctions against Myanmar in response "to ongoing and increasing aerial attacks by the Myanmar military regime."
Those sanctioned include three individuals and four entities, who are accused of supplying weapons and military equipment to the Myanmar military.
"The sanctions announced today, in coordination with the United Kingdom and the European Union, respond to the ongoing and increasing aerial attacks by the Myanmar military regime," said a Foreign Ministry statement, noting that attacks resulted in nearly 400 civilians, including more than 60 children killed and over 750 individuals injured in the past six months.
Describing Myanmar military's attacks as "a grave breach of international peace and security," the statement stressed that it also violates "the basic principles of democracy and respect for human rights."
Foreign Minister Melanie Joly affirmed Canada’s continued support for the aspirations of the Myanmar people.
"We will continue to put pressure on the regime to support the people of Myanmar in their path toward genuine and inclusive democracy," she said.
