Canada imposes sanctions on Russia's energy, military sectors

Ottawa lists 13 individuals, 11 entities, 100 shadow fleet vessels for war in Ukraine

ISTANBUL (AA) - Canada announced Wednesday it is imposing additional sanctions on Russia, targeting energy revenues, financial networks and military capabilities.

The sanctions list 13 individuals and 11 entities, including several involved in developing and deploying Russia's drone program, the Canadian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Canada sanctioned entities supplying cyber infrastructure used in "Russian hybrid strategies against Ukraine" for the first time, it said.

Several liquified natural gas entities were sanctioned as Russia "continues to rely on energy revenues to fund its war of aggression against Ukraine," according to the statement.

The measures also list 100 vessels from Russia's shadow fleet used to transport goods and property. The shadow fleet refers to a network of vessels allegedly operated by Moscow to evade sanctions.

"Canada's new measures further increase the economic costs on Russia," said Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand. Canada "remains unwavering in its commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty" and will "continue to intensify pressure through sanctions in coordination with allies and partners," she added.

Since 2014, Canada has imposed sanctions on more than 3,300 individuals and entities it said are complicit in violating Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Ottawa has sanctioned more than 400 vessels from Russia's shadow fleet.
