Canada sanctions multiple entities over 'gross and systematic human rights violations' in Myanmar

Sanctions target 13 Myanmar senior government officials, 3 entities in response to 'gross human rights violations'

By Merve Aydogan

HAMILTON, Canada (AA) - Canada on Friday announced a new round of sanctions against Myanmar for "for undermining the peace, security and stability of the country and contributing to gross human rights violations."

Those sanctioned include 13 Myanmar senior government officials and three entities, who are accused of "gross and systematic human rights violations" and for taking part in "the entrenched violence, repression, instability and overall worsening crisis in Myanmar."

"Canada continues to urge all countries to impose similar measures. We call on the international community to suspend all operational and financial support to Myanmar’s military regime and to cease the transfer of arms, materiel, dual-use equipment and technical assistance to the regime and its agents," said a Foreign Ministry statement.

"Canada will not remain idle while senior government officials in Myanmar undermine the peace, security and stability of the country and contribute to gross human rights violations," Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said.

The situation in the Southeast Asian nation has deteriorated since Myanmar’s military – known as the Tatmadaw – overthrew the democratically elected government and arrested key political and government leaders in February 2021.
