A massive fire in a chemical factory caused explosions and large-scale blaze in Victoria state of Australia as authorities closed factories and roads around the area, official and local media said Wednesday.
The fire in the factory erupted in Derrimut area of Melbourne's west in Victoria state where hazardous material and unknown toxins continue to burn, ABC News reported.
Some 180 firefighters and 66 vehicles were immediately deployed to control the fire, however official said "it's still burning."
"it's not under control yet. We estimate that we're going to be here a couple of days because of the fuel load in this factory," Deputy Commissioner Michelle Cowling of Fire Rescue Victoria said.
Locals said they saw huge smoke and barrel drums flying into the air from the fire, and landing a few hundred meters away.
Authorities also closed the highway and roads around the factory area while people from nearby factories were also evacuated.
"The warehouse itself is full with multiple types of chemicals, and those drums are being impinged by fire, so they are exploding and therefore they launch into the air and land outside of the fire perimeter," Cowling said and urged people to stay away from the site.
Fire Rescue Victoria also issued warning for surrounding areas and said people should stay inside their homes.
