Mayor Johnson says his order positions Chicago as 1st city in US to seek legal accountability for alleged misconduct by federal immigration agents

By Serdar Dincel

ISTANBUL (AA) - Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has signed an executive order instructing city police to probe and document alleged misconduct by US federal immigration officers for potential prosecution.

"We are putting ICE on notice in our city. Chicago will not sit idly by while Trump floods federal agents into our communities and terrorizes our residents," Johnson said in a statement on Saturday.

Johnson stated that the order positions Chicago as the first city in the US to seek legal accountability for alleged misconduct by federal immigration agents.

He charged that federal immigration agents trample constitutional rights, destabilize communities, and spark life-threatening confrontations while remaining shielded from local or civilian oversight.

The action follows the launch this week of a coalition by nine local district attorneys aimed at prosecuting federal law enforcement officers who break state laws, as New York Gov. Kathy Hochul also proposed legislation to bar cooperation agreements between local police departments and US Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
