BOGOTA / ISTANBUL (AA) - Chilean President Gabriel Boric and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Wednesday discussed the war in Ukraine, global trade, and international stability during a meeting in Santiago.

Speaking at a joint press conference at La Moneda Palace, Boric said Chile remained deeply concerned about global conflicts, including the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

"The events in Ukraine, as well as the recent developments in Palestine and Israel, are sources of great concern for us," Boric stated.

He emphasized that respect for international law is the only path to stability and lasting peace.

Boric also addressed the Ukraine conflict, stressing that any peace negotiations must respect international law and clearly identify Russia as the aggressor and Ukraine as the victim.

"Achieving lasting peace and preventing such an invasion from recurring is only possible through this approach," he said.

Steinmeier thanked Chile for its stance on Ukraine and reaffirmed Europe’s full support for Kyiv.

"In these times, we must not only deepen our cooperation as friends and partners, but we are also compelled to do so," he remarked.

He also reiterated that Europe fully supports Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of strengthened cooperation in a world where the multilateral order is increasingly questioned.

He also advocated for a free trade agreement between the EU and the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) to strengthen economic ties between Europe and South America.

Steinmeier’s visit to Chile was part of a South American tour, which also included stops in Uruguay and Paraguay, aimed at reinforcing Germany’s diplomatic and economic relations in the region.
