China calls for unity to end Ukraine conflict, secure lasting peace in Europe
Beijing says it always advocated for dialogue, negotiation and political settlement of conflict
By Aamir Latif
KARACHI, Pakistan (AA) - China on Tuesday called for “all parties” to work together to bring an end to the ongoing Ukraine conflict and achieve lasting peace in Europe.
“We hope that all parties would work together to address the root causes of the crisis, establish a balanced, effective, and sustainable security architecture, and achieve long-term peace in Europe,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun told reporters in Beijing.
From the beginning of the crisis, Beijing has consistently advocated for resolving the conflict “through dialogue and negotiation,” Guo said.
“China has always advocated for dialogue, negotiation, and a political settlement. Our position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict remains consistent,” he added in response to a question about Beijing's potential role in a peace agreement to resolve the crisis.
Guo emphasized: “China is neither the creator nor a direct party to the Ukraine crisis, but we have not stood idly by or sought to profit from it.”
He stated that China’s proposals have been “objective, fair, rational, and pragmatic,” reflecting a broad consensus within the international community.
Responding to a question about US President Donald Trump seeking access to Ukraine’s rare earth minerals in exchange for its support of Kyiv, Guo reiterated: “China hopes all parties can play a constructive role and create conditions for a political resolution of the crisis and the achievement of peace.”
Guo declined to comment on reports suggesting that non-European countries like Brazil or China might send peacekeeping troops to Ukraine after the conflict, stating: “We do not comment on hypothetical questions.”
"China's position on the Ukraine crisis has always been fair, and has reiterated this position on multiple occasions," he maintained.
- Asia Pacific should not become ‘chessboard for geopolitical confrontation’
Guo also addressed concerns about the Asia-Pacific region, stating that China believes the region should be a place for the development of all countries and should not become a “chessboard for geopolitical confrontation.”
His remarks came when asked whether China was worried that a peaceful resolution to the Ukraine conflict could free up US military resources, potentially leading to a more forceful “rebalance to Asia.”
