China calls political crisis in South Korea 'domestic affair'

China on Wednesday refrained from reacting to the simmering political crisis in South Korea triggered by a failed martial law attempt, calling it a "domestic matter."

"China noted relevant events and will not comment on the ROK’s (Republic of Korea) domestic affairs. China has asked its nationals in the ROK to take extra safety precautions," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian told reporters in Beijing.

"We hope the ROK will take effective measures to protect the safety and security of Chinese nationals and institutions in the ROK," he added.

China’s position on the Korean Peninsula issue remains unchanged, he added.

South Korean President Yoon late Tuesday declared martial law in the country after accusing the main opposition party of sympathizing with North Korea and of anti-state activities. The move, however, was quickly overturned by parliament.
