ISTANBUL (AA) - China has invited South Korean President Lee Jae Myung to a military parade in Beijing, Seoul said Wednesday.
“We are currently in discussions with China on the matter,” said an official from the presidential office, according to the Korea JoongAng Daily newspaper.
The official said Beijing and Seoul are maintaining “close communication based on a shared understanding to strengthen bilateral ties through the APEC Summit (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation)."
Lee previously vowed to engage in “pragmatic diplomacy,” for national interests.
The South Korean president attended a G7 summit in May, but skipped a NATO summit last month.
China will hold the parade in Tiananmen Square on Sept. 3 to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
Beijing refers to World War II as the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
