China launches remote sensing satellite into space

Satellite to be used to survey urban planning, disaster prevention, and reduction, says local public broadcaster

ISTANBUL (AA) - China on Thursday launched a new remote sensing satellite into space.

The satellite, Yaogan-34 02, was launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert of northwestern China.

An indigenously-built Long March-4C rocket carried the satellite, launching at around 3.09 p.m. local time (0709GMT) on Thursday, entering into its planned orbit.

"The optical remote sensing satellite will be used to survey urban planning, the confirmation of land rights, crop yield estimation, and disaster prevention and reduction," Chinese public broadcaster CGTN reported.

Separately, Chinese cyberspace regulators said on Thursday that over 22 million pieces of "illegal information and 2,160 illegal apps and mini-programs were removed" last year.

They added that 1.34 billion "illegal accounts were shut down, and over 3,200 websites were closed in cyberspace cleanup campaign in 2021.
