ISTANBUL (AA) - Amid concerns over population ageing, Chinese lawmakers Tuesday began debating a raise in the retirement age, state media reported.
The lawmakers met under Zhao Leji, the top lawmaker and chairman of the 14th National People's Congress Standing Committee, which held its 11th session in Beijing.
Besides many other items on the agenda of the legislature, the lawmakers are reviewing a draft decision by the State Council on gradually raising the statutory retirement age.
Currently, the retirement age in the world's second-largest populated nation is set by a 1978 statute which is 60 for men and between 50 and 55 for women.
The decision is expected to be made public by Friday.
