Company bankruptcies in Germany at highest since Q2 2005

Bankruptcy filings up 23% year-on-year in June to 1,420

BERLIN (AA) - The number of companies filing for bankruptcy in Germany reached its highest since 2005 in the second quarter of 2025, the Halle Institute for Economic Research (IWH) said Tuesday.

Bankruptcy filings by companies and partnerships rose 23% in June compared to the same month last year, to 1,420, according to an IWH report.

The number of bankruptcies was 50% higher than the average for June between 2016 and 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic.

In the second quarter, 4,524 companies filed for bankruptcy, affecting 45,000 jobs.

The number of bankruptcies increased 7% when compared to the second quarter of 2024.

The report said it was the highest number of bankruptcies since the third quarter of 2005, higher than after the major economic and financial crisis of 2009.
