Continuation of Gaza war creates risks for regional stability, economy: Greece

It also worsens humanitarian crisis, can lead to flow of irregular migration, says Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis

ATHENS (AA) – Continuation of war in Gaza creates risks for regional stability and economy, said Greek Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis on Monday.

"Any day that passes without a resolution worsens the already severe humanitarian crisis and creates risk of expansion of the hostilities (between Israel and Hamas) to the wider region, which would harm regional economy, stability and lead to flow of irregular migration," said Gerapetritis during a news conference with visiting Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry in Athens.

Gerapetritis recalled that Greece said international humanitarian law should be respected "from the first moment" of the conflict in Gaza.

"There should be immediate release of hostages, unhindered flow of humanitarian aid. And the debate on the political solution should begin with the recognition of the two states, within the framework of the decisions of the United Nations Security Council," said the Greek minister.

He said Athens has historical relations with the Arab countries of the region and strategic relations with Israel.

Shoukry, for his part, stressed that the ongoing situation, which he called one of the greatest tragedies of humanity, threatens the regional peace and stability.

“An immediate ceasefire and opening all channels for more humanitarian aid flow to Gaza is must,” he said.

Both ministers also extended condolences to Iran over the death of President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in a helicopter accident on Sunday.
