Coronavirus infections, fatalities mount in Latin America

Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Peru, Chile report new virus-related casualties

BOGOTA, Colombia (AA) - New COVID-19 cases, deaths, and recoveries were reported across six Latin American countries on Wednesday.


- Brazil

Brazil recorded 41,021 new cases and 394 more deaths over the past day.

The country’s overall COVID-19 case tally is now above 29.68 million, including a death toll of 657,696, according to Health Ministry figures.


- Mexico

Mexico’s COVID-19 case tally increased to 5.63 million with 554 new additions in the last 24 hours, the Health Ministry recorded.

The death toll rose to 322,119 with 12 more virus-related fatalities.

The country of some 126 million people has also recorded over 4.93 million recoveries to date.


- Colombia

According to the Health Ministry, 294 new cases and 18 deaths were registered in Colombia.

The overall case count in the country of over 50 million surpassed 6.08 million, including 139,489 fatalities.

As many as 5.91 million COVID-19 patients also regained their health.


- Argentina

A total of 4,690 new infections raised Argentina’s COVID-19 case count above 9.01 million, according to Health Ministry data.

The nationwide fatality count rose to 127,675 as 76 more patients died over the past day.

More than 8.82 million people recovered from the coronavirus in the country.


- Peru

Peru reported 3,323 more infections and 11 fatalities due to the disease over the past day.

The death toll now stands at 211,944, while the total number of cases exceeds 3.54 million.

The country's recovery tally exceeded 3.57 million.


- Chile

The number of coronavirus infections in Chile rose by 5,545 to cross 3.4 million, while 11 more fatalities pushed up the death toll to 55,976, according to official data.

The country has also witnessed nearly 3.31 million people recovering from the deadly virus so far.
