LUSAKA, Zambia (AA) - Former Namibian Agriculture Minister Mac-Albert Hengari was denied bail by a court in Windhoek on Monday and will remain in custody until at least June 3, according to a report.

The Namibian Press Agency said Hengari, 59, who denies any wrongdoing, was dismissed from his post by President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on Sunday following allegations that he raped a 16-year-old girl five years ago.

He was arrested Saturday after allegedly attempting to bribe the now 21-year-old woman to withdraw the case, police said.

According to the report, authorities said Hengari is also under investigation for additional charges, including kidnapping and assault related to the incident.

It added that he appeared before a magistrate’s court in Windhoek on Monday, where he was charged with obstructing the course of justice. He and a 30-year-old co-accused, who is reportedly related to the alleged victim, were both denied bail.

The court cited concerns that the accused may pose a flight risk and could attempt to interfere with witnesses. Their next hearing is scheduled for June 3.
