NEW DELHI (AA) - India’s coronavirus cases on Sunday crossed 8.5 million after the country registered more than 45,600 new infections, official figures revealed.
A total of 45,674 new cases were recorded in the country where the tally of active cases currently stands at 512,665.
The recent update showed 559 more fatalities from COVID-19, taking the virus-related death toll in the country to 126,121. Meanwhile, over 7.8 million people have recovered so far.
The fatality rate in India is 1.48%, the Health Ministry tweeted Sunday morning
“Globally, India continues to report one of the lowest mortality rates. 22 States/UTs are demonstrating CFR less than the national average even today,” it said.
Case-fatality rate is the proportion of people with a particular condition who die from that condition.
While India is presently the second worst-hit country in the world in terms of total coronavirus cases, new infections on a daily basis are slowly declining, except in several cities where cases have started to increase.
Worldwide, nearly 50 million cases have been reported, with 33 million recoveries and 1.25 million fatalities, according to figures compiled by the US’ Johns Hopkins University.
The US, India and Brazil are currently the worst-hit countries.
