Czech intelligence chief says security situation in Europe worst since WWII

Russian expansionism, extremist terrorism constitute major threats, says spy chief Michal Koudelka

ATHENS (AA) – The current situation on the European continent is the worst it has been since World War II, according to the chief of Czech intelligence.

Russian expansionism and the possible return of extremist terror groups like Daesh/ISIS to Europe are major threats to European democracies, Michal Koudelka, head of the Czech Republic’s Security Information Service, told President Petr Pavel in a meeting, according to public broadcaster Radio Prague International.

"We cannot underestimate the risk, although we do not have any concrete information about a direct security threat to the Czech Republic," he said.

Pavel, for his part, reportedly maintained that the security situation would likely grow even more complicated in the months to come.

Security has reportedly been tightened in France and other European countries in the wake of last week’s terrorist attack in Moscow, which Daesh/ISIS said it was responsible for.
