ANKARA (AA) – The death toll in Thailand from heavy rains and floods has climbed to 12 as 1,000 people remain displaced in five affected provinces in the country's south, local media said on Friday.

River floodwaters are still rising, and in several towns in the Pattani province bordering Malaysia, inundation has caused damage to homes and markets.

So far 12 people have died over the last week and one is missing, while over 100,000 people have been affected in the Narathiwat, Yala, and Pattani provinces, according to the Thai Enquirer.

Local authorities on Friday morning issued warnings asking people to not let their children play in the water as they could be swept away, the Bangkok Post reported.

In Malaysia, heavy rain and floods have also displaced thousands of people in the Kelantan region, affecting over 22,000 people, as the state has been battling heavy rain since last Friday.

Ketantan has been hard hit by the ongoing flood, as over 19,000 people are still taking shelter in special camps, according to state-run Bernama News.
