MEXICO CITY (AA) - Heavy rains that have pounded Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil since last week have led to the deaths of 37 people, with more than 70 individuals reported missing and extensive damages, according to the state Civil Defense on Friday.

The latest figures from the state Civil Defense reveal that 351,639 people across 235 cities in Rio Grande do Sul have been affected by the devastating floods, with 23,598 individuals displaced and 74 still missing.

State Governor Eduardo Leite warned during an interview on Thursday that the death toll is likely to rise in the coming days.

"Unfortunately, we know that these figures will increase," said Leite, adding that there are 60 registered missing persons. "We know that people are missing in inaccessible places".

Leite described the crisis as the "most critical in the state's history" and declared a 180-day state of public calamity for all of Rio Grande do Sul.

In a press release, the Ministry of Health announced the deployment of 60 medical professionals to provide assistance to the affected population of Rio Grande do Sul. The Ministry is sending 20 emergency kits containing 32 types of medicines and 16 types of supplies, including gloves, syringes, and bandages.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed his condolences and pledged resources and assistance to the state.

"The federal government is dedicated, 24 hours a day, to supporting the people of Rio Grande do Sul. Everything our government can do will be done to meet the needs of the people affected by the rains," wrote Lula on X.
