Delta flight cancelations continue for third day

NEW YORK (AA) – Delta Airlines continued flight cancellations for a third day Wednesday as the company struggles to resolve issues caused by a system outage earlier this week.

The airlines announced that it canceled a total of 317 flights as of 4:30 p.m. ET (2030GMT), bringing the tally to more than 2,000 flights since early Monday morning.

"Of 3,100 flights that have departed during the day, about 2/3 left within 30 minutes of their scheduled departure time," the company said in a statement.

Delta offers refunds to customers who wish to cancel their trips as a result of a flight cancellation, or if their flights are delayed for 90 minutes or more.

CEO Ed Bastian addressed stranded passengers Tuesday in a video posted on the company’s website. "This isn't who we are. This is not the reliability and service that you have been expecting from Delta Airlines,” he said.

Bastian also stated that $200 worth travel vouchers would be given to passengers waiting at airports around the world if their flights are delayed more than three hours.

The systemic catastrophe began with a power outage in Atlanta, where the company headquarters are located, at approximately 2:30 a.m. ET (0630GMT) Monday. Delta canceled around 1,000 flights that day and an additional 775 flights Tuesday, while a lot more flights wer delayed.

The airlines has lost tens of millions of dollars in revenue, according to analysts, while tens of thousands of its passengers have been affected.

Delta ranks third among all airlines around the world in passengers carried, according to aviation industry analysts at The International Air Transport Association.
