Denmark condemns Israeli ban on UNRWA

Foreign Minister Rasmussen calls for unhindered humanitarian access, respect for international law

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AA) – Denmark on Tuesday condemned Israel's ban on the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), urging Tel Aviv to ensure unhindered humanitarian aid.

"Denmark condemns and is concerned about the Knesset's decision to revoke UNRWA's privileges & immunities,” Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said in a statement on X.

"UNRWA is central to the provision of life-saving humanitarian aid to Palestinian civilians. Israel must ensure unhindered humanitarian aid & respects int. law," he added.

Israeli lawmakers passed on Monday the controversial bill 92-10, banning UNRWA from working in Israel and occupied territories.

The law, to take effect in 90 days, would end contact between UNRWA and Israeli officials, preventing the agency from providing life-saving support to Palestinians across Gaza and the occupied West Bank.

Many countries and world leaders have expressed concerns over the ramifications of the move by Israeli parliamentarians.

Israel has accused UNRWA employees of complicity in the Oct. 7, 2023 cross-border incursion by Hamas. UNRWA, however, denies the accusations.

After the passing of the legislation, Israeli prime minister’s office said before this legislation takes effect, “we stand ready to work with our international partners to ensure Israel continues to facilitate humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza in a way that does not threaten Israel’s security.”
