Denmark urges international community to enforce two-state solution for Israel-Palestine conflict if peace talks fail

Despite its push for peace, country's parliament has failed to officially recognize Palestinian state

PRAGUE, Czech Republic (AA) - Denmark’s prime minister has called on the international community to enforce a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict if the parties involved cannot resolve it themselves.

"The international community should take over the issue... this is not just a matter for the Middle East, it is a matter for the whole world, and therefore we must force through a two-state solution,” Mette Frederiksen told state media outlet DR as she arrived in New York for the United Nations’ ‘Summit of the Future’ on Tuesday.

Frederiksen argued that ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have overshadowed positive initiatives by the UN, adding that she is prepared to take a firm stance to resolve the expanding tensions.

"Everyone is holding their breath right now globally. It has been a really tough period in the Middle East, and there is a risk that it will get even worse," she warned, noting that the current Israeli government opposes a two-state solution.

Despite Denmark’s push for peace, the Danish parliament rejected a proposal in May to officially recognize a Palestinian state, aligning with the government’s view that conditions for such recognition were not yet in place. The decision came in contrast to countries like Spain, Ireland, and Norway, which have endorsed Palestinian independence.

However, Denmark has continued its humanitarian support, disbursing $15.3 million to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees to alleviate the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza, despite objections from Israel.

More than 41,400 people, mostly women and children, have been killed since the start of Israel's brutal war on Gaza that began after a cross-border attack by Hamas last Oct. 7.
