LONDON - A new paper published in The Lancet Planetary Health warns that 'green growth' in high income countries is not happening, despite politicians' claims, and that 'post growth' policies are required to meet the targets set in the Paris Agreement. The study, which compared reductions in carbon emissions in 11 high income countries to those required under the terms of the 2015 Paris Agreement, finds that all countries are falling far short of the necessary reductions, even as politicians and the media celebrate 'green growth' policies.

SWITZERLAND - Cluster Munition Monitor 2023 launch by monitor.org. International campaign to ban cluster munitions launches annual report outlining the countries ratifying and adhering to the 2008 treaty. This year's report reveals cluster munition attacks killed or wounded at least 987 people in 2022, of whom 890 were in Ukraine and 95% of whom were civilians. Human Rights Watch says figures show 'urgent need' for all countries to the international ban on cluster munitions.

MINSK - An estimated 2,500 troops from the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) holding military exercises in Belarus until Sept. 6. The Combat Brotherhood 2023 exercises, which opened on Sept. 1, include troops from Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan. Although a member, Armenia did not send troops.
