Gaza ceasefire, hostage swap deal

Developments in the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's threat to cancel the deal if Israeli hostages in the enclave are not released by Saturday noon.

The first phase, which includes a hostage-prisoner exchange, started on Jan. 19 and is set to last for 42 days.

Egypt and Qatar are ramping up diplomatic efforts to salvage the agreement between Israel and Hamas, an Egyptian source said on Wednesday.

Netanyahu's threat came after Hamas said it would delay the sixth hostage release in response to Israeli "violations" of the truce agreement.


Humanitarian and security situation in Gaza

A Palestinian was killed and another injured in an Israeli drone strike in Rafah, southern Gaza Strip on Wednesday despite the ceasefire, a medical source said.

Palestinian medics and rescue teams also recovered two bodies from the rubble, bringing the overall death toll in Israel's war since October 2023 to 48,222, according to the Health Ministry.


Israeli raids in West Bank

Nearly daily Israeli military raids on Palestinian cities and towns in the occupied West Bank, especially in Jenin, accompanied by illegal settler violence against Palestinians and their property.

On Wednesday, the Israeli army ordered Palestinian residents in the Nur Shams refugee camp to evacuate amid a military offensive in the area, witnesses said.

The army raided the camp on Sunday, in the latest escalation in the northern West Bank military operations that have killed more than 30 people and displaced thousands since Jan. 21.

Israel has killed at least 911 people in the occupied territory since October 2023 and injured over 6,700 others, with more than 14,300 taken into custody.


Developments in Syria under new administration

Latest developments and updates in Syria under the new post-Bashar al-Assad administration.

Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa issued a decree forming a preparatory committee for the National Dialogue Conference, comprising seven members, including two women.

Sharaa also discussed bilateral relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin in their first conversation since the fall of the Assad regime in December.


US envoy Witkoff expected visit to Israel and Qatar

US Special Envoy to Middle East Steve Witkoff's expected visit to Israel and Qatar to discuss the Gaza ceasefire deal.

Witkoff plans to make the trip before US Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrives in Israel on Saturday.


Israeli violations of Lebanon ceasefire

Israel's violations of November's Lebanon ceasefire deal after extension in deadline for troop withdrawal until Feb. 18.

Israeli forces burnt down several homes and a farm in southern Lebanon on Wednesday, bringing the total number of violations to nearly 900.

Israeli public broadcaster KAN said Tel Aviv had asked for an extension in the deadline until Feb. 28.

Cameroon is expected to hold a birthday celebration for its President Paul Biya, who turns 92. Biya is the oldest serving leader in the world, as well as the second-longest-ruling president in Africa. He has been governing Cameroon for over four decades. Before his presidency, he served as the prime minister from 1975 to 1982.


Nigerian army chief to preside over de-radicalization exercise of 800 ex-Boko Haram militants

Nigerian army chief Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa to oversee the rehabilitation process of 800 former Boko Haram fighters in the city of Maiduguri, Borno state.
