BERLIN (AA) – Germany saw over 157,000 cases of domestic violence in 2022, up substantially from the year prior, according to a new official report.
The figures show an overall growing trend of domestic violence cases; 146,655 cases were recorded in 2020, 144,044 in 2021, and 157,500 in 2022, said the 2022 report on domestic violence released in Berlin on Tuesday.
The number of domestic violence victims in 2023 is so far on track to rise some 8.5% compared to 2022, according to statistics.
The report also added that 80% of the victims were women and that 152 people, including 133 women, were killed by their partners in 2022.
Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser was on hand to release the report at a press conference, along with Family, Elderly, Women, and Youth Minister Lisa Paus and Holger Munch, head of the Federal Criminal Police Office.
Domestic violence has unfortunately become like an everyday occurrence in Germany, said Faeser.
"Domestic violence is not a private matter, it is a serious issue in all social groups," she stressed.
Paus explained that in Germany, one person is a victim of domestic violence every two minutes.
"Every hour, more than 14 women suffer from their partners' violence," she added.
