Egypt, Jordan welcome ICJ’s provisional ruling on Gaza

Egyptian Foreign Ministry stresses ‘need to respect, implement’ decisions of world court

By Ahmed Asmar

ANKARA (AA) - Egypt and Jordan on Friday welcomed an interim ruling of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the genocide case brought to the court by South Africa.

In a statement, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry "stressed the need to respect and implement the decisions of the International Court of Justice as the main judicial body of the United Nations."

The ministry said that it looks forward to "a ruling of an immediate cease-fire in Gaza by the court as it ruled in similar cases."

Meanwhile, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry described ICJ's ruling as "historic," and "emphasized the significance of the court's decision to investigate Israel's genocide in the Gaza Strip, and to take prompt procedural action."

The Ministry stressed the "urgency of taking immediate action to put an end to the killing of innocent people in Gaza and destroy all the necessities of life there."

The International Court of Justice on Friday ordered Israel to take "all measures within its power" to prevent acts of genocide in Gaza but fell short of ordering a cease-fire.

The court also ordered Israel to take immediate and effective measures to enable the provision of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance in the Gaza Strip.

South Africa brought a genocide case against Israel to the ICJ late last month and asked it to grant emergency measures to end the bloodshed in Gaza, where more than 26,000 Palestinians have been killed since Oct. 7.
