Egypt says 2 militants killed in shootout

Egyptian security forces killed two militants in an operation on their hideout in the Cairo twin city of Giza on Sunday, the Interior Ministry said.

A ministry statement said the militants were members of Hasm group, which is accused of carrying multiple attacks on security personnel in recent years.

The ministry said the raid was part of “ongoing efforts by authorities to thwart hostile plots targeting the country’s security and stability.”

According to the statement, security forces tracked down a Hasm operative who had entered the country illegally and was hiding in a Giza apartment with another wanted militant.

A civilian was also killed in the exchange of fire, while a police officer was injured.

The ministry vowed to “confront all attempts to target state institutions or threaten the safety of citizens,” and pledged to “pursue those involved in terrorist activities both inside and outside the country.”

Egyptian autohrities declared Hasm, a group previously linked to the now-outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, a terrorist organization in 2017.
