Elections only way to end Libya's crisis: Moroccan foreign minister
Libya's problems will not be solved by conferences or external interventions, says Nasser Bourita
By Khalid Majdoub
RABAT, Morocco (AA) – Upcoming December elections are the only way to resolve Libya’s persisting political crisis, Morocco's foreign minister said Thursday.
“The Libyan crisis won’t be solved by conferences or external interventions. It can only be resolved through democratic practices and the elections agreed upon by Libyans,” Nasser Bourita said in a joint news conference with Aguila Saleh, Libya’s parliament speaker, who is on an official visit to Morocco.
Bourita said conducting elections on schedule and as agreed upon by Libyans and the international community can serve as “the basis to restore stability to Libya.”
Saleh also stressed the importance of the Dec. 24 elections, terming them critical for Libya’s future, and called on Arab countries and the international community to help ensure that they are held on time.
Libya has been torn by civil war since the ouster of late ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011.
On March 16, an elected transitional authority, made up of a unity government and a presidential council, assumed duties to lead the country through a transitional phase to parliamentary and presidential elections slated for Dec. 24.
