Electricity restored in Nigeria after nationwide blackout

West African country faced power cut for several hours after national grid collapsed due to fire, say authorities

By Hassan Isilow

JOHANNESBURG (AA) – Nigeria restored electricity supply late Thursday after the country experienced a nationwide power blackout for several hours after the national grid collapsed due to a fire, authorities said.

The power supply has been restored from the grid, Eko Electricity Distribution Company said in a brief message on X, formerly Twitter.

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) said in an earlier statement: “The grid had collapsed after a fire incident on Kanji/Jebba 330kv line 2.”

Nigeria, like many other African countries, faces power disruptions but it doesn’t last several hours or affect the entire country like it did on Thursday. Many people in the West African country use generators to power their homes and businesses due to frequent power cuts.

Africa’s most industrialized nation, South Africa is also currently facing its worst electricity crisis in decades, causing disruption to homes, and businesses due to aging coal power plants that need maintenance due to increased demand.
