ISTANBUL (AA) - The EU commissioner-designate for enlargement stressed on Thursday the EU’s role as a critical supporter of Ukraine, urging for sustained support as Kyiv defends itself against Moscow.

Marta Kos emphasized Ukraine's struggle as a fight not only for territorial integrity but also to uphold European values in the face of "brute power," during her confirmation hearing at the European Parliament.

"Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine is a stark reminder of the EU's essential role, not only in fostering economic and social progress but as a crucial safeguard against tyranny and promoters of peace," Kos said.

She stressed that supporting Ukraine was a "moral duty" for the EU, pledging that the bloc would be "the strongest possible partner and ally" to the Ukrainian people.

Kos highlighted the transformative impact the conflict has had on the EU's enlargement agenda, noting that Ukraine's candidacy status is unprecedented as the first candidate country embroiled in an active war.

"We see how much development this country has made despite the circumstances," Kos noted, praising Ukraine’s resilience and progress.

She expressed dissatisfaction with recent reports indicating that the US has contributed $56 billion to Ukraine, while the EU support reportedly amounts to $118 billion. "We will do more," Kos assured, reaffirming the EU’s commitment to being Ukraine's principal financial and political ally.

Kos also addressed Russia's extensive influence in the region, warning of its potential to cause "a lot of damage." However, she noted that European support for Ukraine remains a priority, as Ukraine’s resistance is viewed as bolstering the security and unity of Europe.

"Ukraine today is not only helping one country; it is helping to make Europe stronger," Kos concluded, reinforcing the EU’s dedication to Ukraine’s defense and European solidarity.
