EU condemns 'shocking act of terror' in Iran

At least 84 victims killed in twin attacks in Kerman who gathered to commemorate death of Gen. Qassem Soleimani

LONDON (AA) - The European Council on Thursday condemned twin bombings in Iran that killed at least 84 victims.

"The EU condemns in the strongest terms the bombing in the city of Kerman in Iran. This shocking act of terror has cost the lives of innocent civilians, with many injured," EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said in a statement on behalf of the EU.

The statement expressed solidarity with the Iranian people, adding: "Our thoughts are with the victims and their families."

The blasts occurred outside the cemetery where thousands had gathered to commemorate the fourth anniversary of the death of the former chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds Force, Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad in 2020.

Earlier, authorities had put the death toll at 103, which was later revised by forensic experts to 84, including 284 injured.

The Daesh/ISIS terror group has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
