MERSIN, Türkiye (AA) - EU's top diplomat in Türkiye on Wednesday praised the southern Turkish province of Mersin for cooperation between Ankara and the European Union.

Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut, head of the EU Delegation to Türkiye, along with EU heads of missions and an accompanying delegation visited the International Port of Mersin.

Meyer-Landrut toured the port on a tugboat and then told the press that the region is a common geography for the EU as several European countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.

Noting that climate change is warming the region and the sea much faster, he said these issues are among the topics they will be discussing.

Meyer-Landrut also said that there were many projects in Mersin that are supported and financed by the EU, including the management of wastewater or fresh water as well as education with 20 schools being built in the region.

Earlier, Meyer-Landrut, the EU heads of missions, and the delegation met for a working lunch hosted by Hakan Sefa Cakir, chair of the Mersin Chamber of Commerce.

The envoys and accompanying delegations also made a courtesy visit to the governor of Mersin, Ali Riza Pehlivan.

“During the meeting, current developments and joint projects were discussed,” the EU delegation to Türkiye said on X, sharing photos of the occasion.
