Salome Zourabichvili stresses importance of 'European moral support to ensure the Georgian people don’t feel isolated'

LONDON (AA) - European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili's commitment to her country’s European path.

“Our meeting comes at an important moment—the upcoming elections will be a crucial test for Georgia’s democracy. And a defining moment for the future of EU-Georgia relations," von der Leyen said Wednesday on X following bilateral talks with Zourabichvili in Brussels.

Zourabichvili said she reaffirmed to von der Leyen the "Georgian people's commitment to accelerating our European path."

"I emphasized the crucial importance of European moral support to ensure the Georgian people don’t feel isolated as they declare their European choice on October 26th," she said on X.

Recently, the country's path to European Union membership has come to a standstill due to the controversial Transparency of Foreign Influence law, which has been criticized by Western countries, including those of the EU.

Citizens will cast their votes on Oct. 26 across Georgia as part of parliamentary elections to choose 150 members of parliament for a four-year term.
