Investigations determined disease came to country with sheep imported from Romania, reports local media

ATHENS (AA) – The EU has sent experts to Greece in response to a sheep and goat disease outbreak, the local media reported on Wednesday.

They are expected to arrive today to help their Greek colleagues in handling the outbreak of the contagious ovine rinderpest disease in the central part of the country, daily Kathimerini reported.

It maintained that investigations determined that the disease came into the country with sheep and goats imported from Romania, and not from Türkiye as initially thought.

Animals from the same supplier were also exported to other parts of Europe, it added.

The disease was first detected on July 11 in the central Thessaly region.

To curb the spread of the disease, slaughterhouses have been ordered closed until Friday and dozens of animals have been culled, according to the report.
