ISTANBUL (AA) - The EU will adopt a directive that includes switching to digital driving licenses that can be accessed on mobile phones or other digital devices by the end of 2030, according to a statement Tuesday by the European Commission.

It stressed that with the update of the driver's license directive, the minimum requirements for the suitability of drivers across EU countries will change, and rules on probationary periods for novice drivers will also be harmonized.

"The new Directive on driving licenses aims to reduce the number of crashes on EU roads and to cut undue burdens on citizens and authorities related to administrative procedures," it said.

Additionally, a policy that has been shown to greatly increase road safety, the introduction of an EU-wide accompanied driving program for drivers aged 17 and older, will be implemented.

It was also noted that those who wish can also obtain the physical version of their driver's license, and if the driver's license is also used as an identity card, it will have a validity period of 10 years, while the validity period for the use of automobiles and motorcycles only as a driver's license will be 15 years.

"These updated driving license rules mark a major step forward in modernizing our licensing system and enhancing road safety across the EU," said Transport Commissioner Apostolos Tzitzikostas.

"From the introduction of digital driving licenses to measures that support young drivers, this agreement paves the way for a more accessible, efficient, and safer mobility system. Most importantly, it will help us reduce fatalities on EU roads, bringing us closer to our Vision Zero goal," he added.
