EU will discuss new sanctions against Iran, German foreign minister says
Baerbock condemns Iran over executions of protesters ‘without fair trials,’ says new sanctions will target Revolutionary Guards
BERLIN (AA) - The EU will discuss today new sanctions against Iran over the executions of protesters following unfair trials, Germany’s foreign minister said on Monday.
“We have seen that the Iranian regime executed a second person without a fair trial. This public execution is clearly a blatant attempt to intimidate people,” Annalena Baerbock told reporters ahead of a meeting of the EU foreign ministers in Brussels.
“With the new sanctions package, we will particularly target those who are responsible for these executions, the violence against innocent people, in particular the Revolutionary Guards,” she said.
Baerbock said Germany and the EU will continue to stand in solidarity with the peaceful protesters in Iran.
Iran has been rocked by sweeping protests in recent months since the death of 22-year-old Iranian woman Mahsa Amini in the custody of the morality police in September.
At least 475 people have been killed in the demonstrations amid a heavy-handed security crackdown, according to human rights groups. More than 18,000 have been detained by authorities.
