BELGRADE, Serbia (AA) - The European Commission chief pledged support on Friday for flood-affected regions in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
"I want to reassure the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina, especially in flood-hit areas, that Europe stands with them. We are by your side and we will continue to support you," Ursula von der Leyen said during a joint press conference with Borjana Kristo, chairman of the Council of Ministers of Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the capital Sarajevo.
Von der Leyen is currently touring the Western Balkans.
According to von der Leyen, Bosnia requires immediate assistance to recover from the devastating floods.
"Therefore, we decided to mobilize €20 million ($21.65 million) for immediate funds, and later the solidarity fund will support reconstruction and recovery," she added.
The Balkan country was impacted by floods following heavy rains on Oct. 4, resulting in 27 fatalities, widespread infrastructure damage, and disrupted access to crucial roads and railways.
Von der Leyen is expected to visit Serbia later today and Montenegro on Saturday.
