European farmers protest at Belgium's Liege Airport over EU-Mercosur trade agreement

BRUSSELS (AA) - Farmers' unions from Wallonia and across Europe protested on Wednesday at Liege Airport in Belgium against the EU-Mercosur free trade agreement, warning that it would subject European agriculture to "unfair competition."

The Walloon Farmers' Federation (FUGEA) led the protest, along with other agricultural unions, arguing that the agreement with South America's Mercosur bloc would allow imports produced under lower environmental and social standards, according to French-language broadcaster RTBF.

The demonstration drew farmers from Wallonia, Flanders, and France, who claimed the airport was chosen as a symbol of globalization.

They criticized the EU-Mercosur deal, which could be ratified this week in Brazil, saying it would "undermine European producers by allowing imports not subject to EU rules."

The agreement, 25 years in the making, is strongly backed by Germany and Spain, which argue that it would boost European exporters at a time when the EU is struggling with weak growth and rising global competition.

Supporters view it as a tool for diversifying trade partners in the face of escalating tariff pressure from US President Donald Trump.

"Imported products will not meet the same environmental and social standards as ours," said Hugues Falys, spokesperson for FUGEA, citing the use of pesticides banned in the EU.

FUGEA President Philippe Duvivier called on the EU to adopt a long-term strategy for agriculture, adding that farmers want stronger protections and "fair, stable prices."

Meanwhile, a large farmers' protest is planned for Thursday in Brussels, with thousands expected to attend as EU leaders are set to meet for a summit.
