BERLIN (AA) - NATO’s former Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was awarded Germany’s Order of Merit on Tuesday for his contributions to European security and transatlantic ties.
German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier expressed gratitude for Stoltenberg’s work as secretary general of NATO over the past decade, and said during his time NATO became stronger.
“You have shaped the alliance through your integrity, your clear political analysis and your personal commitment. You have ensured that NATO is stronger and more united than ever at a time when Russia is threatening us again,” he said at the award ceremony held at the Bellevue Palace.
Steinmeier said Sweden and Finland’s NATO memberships could not been possible without Stoltenberg’s efforts and commitment.
“Your services to the security of Germany and NATO, especially through the northern expansion, are really historic. I would like to thank you on behalf of the Federal Republic of Germany for this great and impressive personal commitment,” he said.
Stoltenberg received the “Grand Cross” Order of Merit of Germany, one of the highest honors awarded to foreign leaders and statesmen.
In his speech, Stoltenberg thanked Steinmeier and said it was a “great privilege and honor” for him to receive this award.
“I think it as a recognition not only of what I have done, but recognition to the whole of NATO, for what NATO allies have done over the last 10 years, to ensure that we're able to cope with a more challenging security environment,” he said.
Stoltenberg said Germany has played an important role within the alliance with its increased contributions to Europe’s security. He also thanked Steinmeier for his friendship and cooperation over the past years.
“We have worked together in different capacities, and I always listen to your advice, your guidance on difficult issues. So, therefore, it is a great honor for me to be here today, to receive the award from you, an old friend and political colleague,” he said.
