Former national security advisor seeks immunity from prosecution in exchange for testifying to congressional committees

NEW YORK (AA) - President Donald Trump’s former national security advisor, Michael Flynn on Thursday offered to testify before Congress on the Trump team’s ties with Russia.

In exchange, Flynn -- who resigned last month -- seeks immunity from prosecution, according to his lawyer, Robert Kelner.

Flynn’s resignation came after he misled top Trump officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, on his communications with Moscow’s ambassador to Washington.

Kelner said his client was exploring the possibility of giving testimony to Senate and House of Representatives intelligence committees. Media reports suggest that Flynn might also agree to be interviewed by the FBI.

“General Flynn certainly has a story to tell, and he very much wants to tell it, should circumstances permit,” Kelner said in a statement.

He added that Flynn, a decorated army veteran, would not agree to questioning “in such a highly politicized, witch-hunt environment without assurances against unfair prosecution”.

FBI Director James Comey revealed earlier this month that the agency was investigating the Trump team’s contacts with Russia and whether Moscow interfered in the 2016 presidential election.
