Excavation begins in Turkey’s Hyllarima ancient city
City has Roman theater, wall ruins, rock tombs

MUGLA, Turkey (AA) - Excavation and cleaning began Thursday in the ancient city of Hyllarima in Turkey’s western Mugla province.
It is unclear when and who founded the ancient city in the Kavaklidere district, which has a Roman theater, wall ruins and rock tombs.
A joint project has been prepared by the Kavaklidere municipality, Mugla Governorship, Mugla Sitki Kocman University and Mugla Museum Directorate to preserve historical artifacts for future generations.
Under the scientific consultancy of Bekir Ozer, surface cleaning and excavation began with three archaeologists and 12 workers employed within the municipality.
Kavaklidere Mayor Mehmet Demir emphasized the importance of bringing to light the historical and cultural values in the district, preserving them for future generations and contributing to the promotion of the district.
