ATHENS (AA) - A far-right Polish lawmaker put out a Hannukah candle in the parliament with a fire extinguisher, local media reported on Tuesday.

Grzegorz Braun, a senior lawmaker with the Confederation Party, grabbed the fire extinguisher and walked up to the menorah before spraying the candles with the extinguisher powder, according to the state-run PAP news agency.

A Hanukkah menorah is a candelabrum lit during the eight-day Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.

After the incident, Szymon Holownia, speaker of the parliament, expelled Braun from Tuesday's sitting and called a recess in the session, during which the new Donald Tusk government was to be put to a vote of confidence.

A motion against the lawmaker’s act will be sent to the prosecutor's office for disturbing a religious ceremony, Holownia said.

Later, Braun was penalized with the withdrawal of half of his salary for three months and his entire subsistence allowance for six months.
