Federal Reserve chair should bring down interest rates, says Trump

'If we had a Fed chairman that understood what he was doing, interest rates would be coming down,' says US president

WASHINGTON (AA) - US President Donald Trump said on Friday that Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell should bring down the interest rates.

"If we had a Fed chairman that understood what he was doing, interest rates would be coming down. He should bring them down," Trump told reporters at the White House.

He said the inflation is going down.

The president on Thursday accused Powell of “playing politics,” criticizing him for keeping interest rates high and suggesting he has the power to dismiss him at will.

Trump's remarks came after Powell warned Wednesday that Trump’s tariffs are "highly likely" to cause at least a temporary rise in inflation.

Powell, whose term runs through May 2026, said he intends to serve through the end of his term and added removing a Fed chair is "not permitted under the law."
