Ferris wheel fire at German music festival injures at least 23

Incident took place at Highfield festival in Leipzig; police investigating cause of fire

BERLIN (AA) - A fire on a Ferris wheel at a music festival in eastern Germany injured at least 23 people, dpa news agency reported on Sunday.

The blaze broke out on the Ferris wheel at the Highfield Festival in Leipzig on Saturday night, police said.

Investigators said the fire started when a substance beneath the Ferris wheel ignited for reasons that are still not known. The flames spread to the gondola.

As many as 16 people, including police officers and members of the first aid team, were treated at local hospitals.

Four of those injured suffered burns, while one person was hurt from a fall.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
