Finland considers easing restrictions on nuclear weapons transit
Under Finnish law, nuclear explosives banned in all forms, including their import, manufacture, possession, use

ISTANBUL (AA) - Finland is weighing potential changes to legislation that currently prohibits the transit of nuclear weapons through its territory, as discussions over nuclear deterrence intensify across Europe, YLE news reported on Thursday.
The debate has gained traction after French President Emmanuel Macron floated the idea of expanding France’s nuclear deterrence to cover parts of Europe and launched consultations with several European countries on the issue.
Although Finland is not among the countries involved in the initial talks, which reportedly include Sweden, the development has triggered internal discussions within the Finnish government about existing legal restrictions.
Under Finnish law, nuclear explosives are banned in all forms, including their import, manufacture, possession, and use. The legislation also explicitly forbids the transport of nuclear weapons across Finnish territory.
At the same time, the government is preparing broader reforms to Finland’s nuclear energy legislation. The draft proposal, currently being reviewed by the Defense Ministry, could be submitted to parliament as early as next week.
Officials have indicated that the planned overhaul is not expected to directly address nuclear weapons, with any potential changes likely to be handled through a separate legislative track.
Authorities have also underlined that Finland has no intention of becoming a nuclear-armed country.
Since joining NATO in 2023, Finland has taken part in the alliance’s nuclear-related exercises, with its F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets participating in supporting roles. Through its NATO membership, the country relies largely on the alliance’s nuclear deterrence, particularly that provided by the United States.
