Finland says border with Russia remains closed over 'instrumentalised migration'
'We have seen no signs that Russia is changing its behaviour. On the contrary ... Russia is continuing its hybrid operation,' says Finnish interior minister

LONDON (AA) - Citing an "instrumentalised migration threat" from Russia, Finland said on Thursday that its border crossing points with Russia will remain closed until at least April 14.
In a statement, the Interior Ministry said the government decided to extend the total closure of the eastern border by two months, explaining: "Under the current circumstances, it is a necessary and proportionate measure, as instrumentalised migration poses a serious threat to Finland's national security and public order.”
The ministry also said it will also not be possible to submit applications for international protection at land border crossing points between the two countries.
"Based on the information provided by the authorities, it is likely that instrumentalised migration would resume if border crossing points were opened at the eastern border," added the statement.
"We have seen no signs that Russia is changing its behaviour. On the contrary, the information we have received confirms our assessment that Russia is continuing its hybrid operation," said Interior Minister Mari Rantanen.
She said that there are hundreds if not thousands of migrants who are currently staying close to the border on the Russian side who are waiting for the chance to cross into Finland.
"The temporary closure of border crossing points is the result of Russia's actions, which require Finland to put national security first,” added Rantanen.
Last month, Helsinki said that it would extend the closure of its border with Russia for another month.
Russia previously denied Finland's accusations of "instrumentalisation of migrants."
At 1,340 kilometers (832 miles), Russia’s border with Finland is its longest with a NATO country. It has been under increased vigilance since the start of Russia’s war on Ukraine two years ago this month.
