Finland, Sweden finish repairs on Baltic Sea cables

2 cables – one connecting Finland to Europe, the other connecting Sweden to Lithuania – now fully functioning, say authorities

ATHENS (AA) - Finland and Sweden have finished repairs on their Baltic Sea cables, which had been out of commission since Nov. 18, Finnish media reported on Friday.

Repair work on a broken C-Lion1 telecommunications cable linking Finland and Germany in the Baltic Sea is complete and is functioning again, said public broadcaster YLE, citing Cinia, the state enterprise for IT and telecommunication services.

"Repairs were started quickly and the fault was fixed a bit faster than anticipated,” said Ari-Jussi Knaapila, Cinia's CEO.

Another cable on the Baltic Sea floor, between Sweden and Lithuania, was broken a day before Cinia's cable was damaged.

It was repaired on Thursday evening, according to Arelion, the Swedish firm that manages the cable.

The cable is now operating at full capacity, Arelion announced.

On Nov. 18, Finland reported damage to C-Lion1, Finland’s only submarine communication cable connecting the country to Europe via Germany.

On Nov. 19, Sweden announced that it had launched an investigation into the damage to the two undersea cables.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius blamed the damage on a "hybrid action" linked to sabotage, underscoring growing concerns about the security of critical infrastructure in the region.
