First snowfall of 2025 hits London as temperatures plummet
Amber warnings for snow, ice in effect as roads, railways, airports face disruption

LONDON (AA) - London experienced its first snowfall of this year Saturday as authorities issued a weather warning for snow and ice in Britain over the weekend.
The snow started late Saturday as parts of the UK are bracing for disruption amid heavy snow and freezing weather hit the country, with an amber weather warning in place.
Northern England, the Midlands and Wales are expected to be among the worst hit as wintry weather is forecasted to bring 20 - 40 centimeters (8 - 16 inches) of snow in some places, according to BBC Weather.
The Met Office has warned of possible power cuts as well as disruption to travel.
There were several flights delayed and diverted at Bristol Airport late Saturday.
Around 11 p.m. local time, the airport reopened but warned that there are still "challenging weather conditions."
"There may be delays on Sunday morning as some aircraft are out of position. Passengers are advised to check with their airline," Bristol Airport wrote on X.
Birmingham Airport said early Sunday it is currently closed for a "minimum of two hours" for snow clearing and safety reasons.
The National Highways has also reported a "number of collisions" on the M5 motorway which links the Midlands with the South West.
Ahead of a week of low temperatures, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) issued cold-health alerts for all of England on Friday.
A seven-month-old baby died Friday after a crash on Metheringham Heath Lane, which runs between the A15 and the B1188.
Lincolnshire Police said the collision could be linked to icy conditions in the area. On Sunday, additional snowfall is expected across parts of northern England, Northern Ireland and Scotland.
A warning for snow and freezing rain covering most of Wales and central England, including the Midlands and the northwestern cities of Liverpool and Manchester, is in effect until noon Sunday
A separate warning for snow covering most of northern England including Leeds, Sheffield and the Lake District is in place until midnight.
